Redbull was able to fill the Hawthorne Bridge and the East and West banks of the river

A very action packed weekend at the SW waterfront. Redbull held their Flugtag (German for “flying day”) event in Portland, which hasn’t made an appearance in the Rose City since 2004. An estimated 80,000 caffeinated viewers were in attendance. The east and west banks of the Williamette were coated in Flugtag fanatics. Hawthorne Bridge was backed up with people lining the bridge’s sidewalk. More people were in attendance here than when Barrack Obama came to town.

Image courtesy of RedbullThis year’s events definitely sparked interest from my friends and I. We would definitely love to take part in next year’s event if it comes back. It was great to see large shoes, bomber planes, lego men and even a chinese take-out box take a plunge in the not-so-clean Williamette. Each team usually did a little dance routine before thrusting their flying contraption into the muggy river. There were 31 teams that competed and it was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. We managed to smuggle vodka in plastic red cups to the event, which made everything a little bit more interesting. Thanks Julie!
